Palmer and Bawden claim their first World Tour Medal

Australian Institute of Sport beach volleyball athletes Becchara Palmer and Louise Bawden have performed magnificently, claiming the silver medal in the women’s final of the Mazury Open, which took place in Stare Jablonki, Poland, on Saturday 8 August, as part of the Swatch FIVB World Tour.

Palmer and Bawden put up a great fight against world number ones Juliana Silva and Larissa Franca from Brazil, who defeated the Australians in two sets (21 to 14 and 21 to 16) in 38 minutes. The second seeded Brazilian team of Talita Antunes and Maria Antonelli claimed the bronze medal.

The Australian pair, who were the Mazury Open’s number 26 seeds, won eight out of ten of their matches, which included contests against other higher-ranked opponents from Germany, Brazil and Austria, to reach the final.

‘We were thrilled to be on the podium today with two of the best teams in the world,’ said Bowden. ‘I never imagined I would get a medal this year. My biggest hope was just playing well with a chance to finish in the top nine at an event.’

Bawden’s partner, Becchara Palmer, was named the most outstanding player at the women’s Mazury Open.

Match reports will be sent out and posted on Volleyball Australia’s website, www.avf.org.au, as soon as they are made available from the touring staff.

The Perfect Season

The changing of the guard has occurred in the Women’s Australian Volleyball League this year, with the Western Australia Pearls taking over the mantle as the dominant force in the competition. The Pearls made light works of the QAS Pirates in the semi-final, taking the match 3-0, which set up a grudge-match Gold Medal playoff against Uni Blues, who took care of South Australia in the other semi-final.

The WA Pearls went on to complete the perfect season, 12 wins, no losses. The match had the crowd on the edge of their seats. WA came from behind to claim the first set 27-25, the second set was just as close, 25-23 to WA. But Uni Blues refused to let go of the Championship, steaming through the third set 25-8. The Pearls regathered between sets and neither team could gain control in the fourth, with the scoreboard being even for the majority of the set. A couple of unforced errors by Uni Blues was capitalised by WA, with Michelle Hand hitting the match-winning cross court kill.

South Australia made amends for their disappointing semi-final loss, claiming the bronze against the QAS Pirates. Although the first set was competitive, South Australia never looked like losing, taking the game 25-21, 25-17, 25-19.

Tara West from the WA Pearls was named the AVL’s Most Valuable Player, voted by the coaches throughout the preliminary season.

Congratulations to WA Pearls, 2009 Women’s AVL Champions and to Tara West, 2009 MVP.

Queensland Equal the Record

Queensland has equalled the record previously held by Victoria, by snatching a fourth consecutive President Cup win at the Australian Junior Volleyball Championships, held in Brisbane in July.

Finals day proved to a blockbuster day of volleyball, with Queensland and Victoria contesting five out of the six gold medals that were on offer. By winning three gold medals, Queensland narrowly beat out the southerners for the coveted Presidents Trophy, by only two points. South Australia secured third place, improving on their fourth place in 2008.

The week was a success with 56 teams travelling from around Australia and New Zealand to contest the Championships. Special thanks to Volleyball Queensland, its staff and volunteers who worked tirelessly to host the week-long tournament.

The AJVC will move to Western Australia next year, to be held in Perth from 4th -10th July 2010. For results and All-Star 7 teams go to the AVF website, www.avf.org.au/AJVC.

AUS Women Team prepares for Vietnam Trips

The Senior Women’s Volleyball Team held a team camp following the successful completion of WAVL. The camp was held at Monash University Sport over two days and involved almost 30 athletes. A chance to touch base and prepare for the upcoming tours, the training camp involved 4 on court sessions and 1 testing session. The new testing regime introduces a national database for the Women’s Program that compares our results with the top 8 teams in the Asian region and each other. Developed with high performance staff at Monash University and keeping inline with other international high performance testing procedures, it’s expected that the results database will be available as a useful tool for high performance coaches of the entire women’s program.

While the team for Vietnam Cup had already been selected, it was a last chance effort for players to compete for a spot in the Asian Seniors Team – both competitions to be held in Vietnam in August and September respectively. The camp allowed some pre tour preparation and was invaluable in engaging the girls and coaches of the women’s program.

Volleyball Australia Staff Changes

After 2 very successful years, Jenny Becker has resigned  from her role as Women’s National Program Manager with the AVF. During that time, Jenny was primarily responsible for the establishment and development of the AVF’s National Talent Identification and Development (NTID) Program for Women’s Beach Volleyball as well as the continued delivery of the AVF’s Women’s National Junior Program.

The AVF is pleased to announce the appointment of Simon Naismith as Jenny Becker’s replacement with 12 months left to run on the Volleyball’s NTID funding. Simon brings many years of coaching and program management experience to his new role having been previously employed as the AIS/National Beach Volleyball Program Manager and SASI Volleyball Head Coach.

The Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) has appointed Steve Tutton as head coach of the AIS/national beach volleyball program.

Tutton previously held the position of AIS head coach for beach volleyball (1997–2007) before becoming program manager for high performance Olympic and Commonwealth Games sports at the South Australian Sports Institute.

And last but not least, we welcome Cassie Behrens to the VA family for a 12 month contract, as the Events Coordinator working from Canberra and primarily responsible for the 2009 World Masters Games.

VA AGM & Awards Dinner

The Annual General Meeting of the Australian Volleyball Federation will be held in Canberra on Saturday 31 Oct 2009. Each member state is entitled to send two delegates, however observers are welcome to attend the meeting. Further details on the AGM will be available on the Volleyball Australia website and distributed to member state associations in September 2009.

The Volleyball Australia Annual Excellence Awards Dinner will also be in Canberra on Saturday 31 Oct 2009. This gala event is open to all members of the volleyball community and is an excellent opportunity to celebrate the achievements of our Excellence Award winners and the volleyball highlights of 2008-09. Coinciding with the Canberra leg of the Men’s AVL, and the Referee’s Forum, this event promises to be an exciting evening for all.

Tickets will be available from Volleyball Australia and include a three course dinner and drinks. Keep checking the Volleyball Australia website for more details.

Sydney 2009 World Masters Games

The World Masters Games are being held in Sydney from 10th-18th October 2009. This event will see approximately 1100 volleyball participants come together for a week of competition and social activities. The indoor competition will take place at Sydney Olympic Park Sports Halls and the beach event at South Maroubra Beach.

There are a number of opportunities available for you to participate in the games as a technical or sport volunteer. These roles range from Referees to Competition Manager to Court Supervisor.

Volunteers receive many great benefits. This is a great opportunity to participate in an international event that attracts more participants than the Olympic Games.
