VTAM - Australia v Canada - Game 2 Live Match Report

 

Welcome to International Men's Volleyball - Australia versus Canada, Game 2 coming live from the Southern Cross Stadium, Tuggeranong in Canberra.  We will be scribing a live match report for the game, so stand by for all the action.  The game is set to get underway at 7.30pm AEST.

Australia won the first match up on Thursday night in Brisbane, in a tight 3 set game 25-22, 25-23, 23-22.  The Canadians will be set on getting some payback and winning this game to level the series.

Set 1
Australia - Young, Zingel, Roberts, Yudin, Thwaite, Carroll, Borgeaud (L) 
Canada - Mainville, Howatson, Soonias, Van Lankvelt, Kaminski, Winters, Raymond (L)

We have another sell oput crowd here tonight, the Canberra crowd have brought their voices and horns and are eager for some action. Winters serves the first ball, Roberts gets the tool, 1-0 Australia. Thwaite in the middle gets the block, 2-0 Australia. Van Lankvelt gets high above the net to get Canada's first points, 1-3. Van Lankvelt fires a cross court ball, its out off Borgeaud, 2-4 Canada. Canada pushes the ball wide of the sideline, Australia push their lead to four, 6-2. Yudin fires the ball from position 2, Canada are called for a carry, Carroll with a great serve, Canada send the ball long and then technical time out at 3-8 down.

Roberts runs the pipe, but Canada were ready for it, Young finishes the point with a setter dump, Canada call time out at 4-9 down. Mainville gets the up but the communication is lacking from Canada that time, it hits the floor, Australia 10-5. Young to Zingel who punishes the ball, Australia 11-5. Howatson with a great pancake, but Roberts from the outside finds the seam, 12-6 Australia. Duff gets the block on Australia. Roberts this time from position 2 finds the open court. Australia take the lead to six, 13-7. Canada side out, Soonoias with the float serve, he finishes from the outside putting the ball at Roberts feet. Roberts gets his own back on Soonias. Canada are starting to close the gap, its back to four, 10-14. Carroll pushes the ball through the blockers. Roberts with the defensive up, but Carroll is blocked out, Canada 11-15. Canada not happy with the ball, Winters maintaining the ball was up, but the referee doesn't change the call, at the time out its Australia 16-11.

Yudin serves into the net, 12-16 Canada. Roberts is on fire this set, again he fires one from position 2. Net touch called on Canada, the Aussies push the lead back to six, 12-18. Time out called by Canada at 12-19.

Carroll with serve, Thwaite with a MASSIVE kill block on Soonias, 20-12. Winters catches the cord, four hits called against Canada, 21-12 Australia. Winters sends the ball across court, the angle was difficult, but he gets it inside the attack line. Roberts tools Duff, Australia 22-14. Roberts blocks Van Lankvelt, but Canada keep the ball alive, second round Van Lankvelt kills it, Canada 16-22. Carroll gets the kill, Australia 23-16.  Yudin sends the ball down the line to bring up set point for Australia, 24-17, Thwaite with serve, but Van Lankvelt won't have any of it, set point saved, 18-24 Canada. Van Lankvelt hands the set over through a service error, 25-18.

Set 2
Australia - Young, Zingel, Roberts, Yudin, Thwaite, Carroll, Borgeaud (L) 
Canada - Duff, Howatson, Soonias, Van Lankvelt, Kaminski, Winters, Raymond (L)

Young steps up to serve, but Canada gets the winner, Australia side out through a service error to Howatson, 1-all. Winters up to serve at 2-1, but its Thwaite off the fast ball from Young that gets the winner in the open backcourt, Australia even the score, 2-2. Kaminski gets the block against Yudin, he's now up to serve, Yudin puts the ball out off Soonias' hands, Australia 4-3. What a bullet of a serve from Yudin, Raymond shenks it, Australia 5-3. Yudin with a wild swing, its well wide of the line. Wide ball out to Yudin, Winters makes a diving pick up but just couldn't control it, Australia 6-5. Zingel blocked Duff, Canada picks it up but its out. 7-5 to the Aussies. Ripper serve by Yudin, but Van Lankvelt tips over the block, 6-7 Canada. Soonias finishes off the long rally to even the scores at 7-all. Roberts through the seam of the Canadian block, takes Australia into the Technical time one point up, out 8-7.

Zingel with a jumper, Howatson sets the ball over Winters head, easy point to Australia, 9-7. Soonias with a back row, Carroll shenks it into the crowd, 9-8. Yudin hit the pipe 10-9. Kaminski sides out with a quick ball. Winters hits wide of the triple block, Borgeaud touches it on the way out, its back to even at 10-all. Soonias from the right with some firepower down on Australia, Canada take the lead for the first time this set, Australia calls time out at 10-11 down.

Howatson sends the ball to Winters on the outside, who pushes it off the block. Howatson follows with a service error, 11-12 Australia. Howatson with the backset, winters fires it across court, 13-11. Kaminski blocks Roberts, 14-11. Winters puts it into the net, 12-14. Thwaite serves long, 15-12 Canada.Yudin tips it over, Canada keep it alive, Zingel gets the block Van Lankvelt 14-13. Alexander and Edgar have replaced Young and Carroll. At the Technical Timeout Canada lead 15-13.

Soonias with the jump float, Zingel hit the quick through the middle. Aussie triple block Van Lankvelt, the gap back to one, 15-16 Australia. Raymond is the target, great defencsive ups byt the Libero, Edgar tools duff's block, time out Canada, scores are level 16-16.

Yudin sends it long, 17-17, Van Lankvelt puts it into the net, 18-17 Australia, Zingel serves long, 18-18.  Duff serves in, out the back to Edgar and it just catches the line deep in position one, 19-18 the Aussies. Canada hits the Aussie block, the ball is tight on the net, Roberts seizes the opportunity and pounds it into the open court, Canada time out, Australia lead 20-18. Soonias hits off and out the block 19-20 Canada. The ball is called in, First ref overrules to level the score 20-20. Roberts throught the block. Scheider replaces Howatson. Kaminski finds the line with the quick ball, scores back to even 21-21. Australia sends it long, they call time out at 21-22 down.

Winters steps up to serve, Soonias against a triple and he gets the touch, Young and Carroll come back in, Canada lead 23-21. Raymond chases the ball down but he can't get it, 22-23. Aidan Zingel with the block on Soonias to level the score at 23-23. ROOF, Zingel on Van Lankvelt, bringing up set point, 24-23. Roberts with not one but two diving saves in the back court, Roberts runs the pipe, but it Yudin that finishes off the point and the set 25-23.

Set 3
Australia - Young, Zingel, Roberts, Yudin, Thwaite, Carroll, Tyrrell (L) 
Canada - Duff, Howatson, Soonias, Van Lankvelt, Kaminski, Winters, Raymond (L)

Canada get the early lead, 3-0. Young and Thwaite block on Winters 1-3.  Yudin runs the pipe, he gets some hang time, but a net touch is called against Canada, 2-4 Australia. Soonias gets the cross court winner 5-3. Van Lankvelt thought he gets the block on Young, denied, he doesn't make the same mistake twice. Yudin hits it high above the Canadian block 7-all. Duff tries to tool Zingels block, but pushes it wide and its out, Australia take the lead into Tech time out 8-7. Passier subs in for Thwaite at 9-8. Zingel ACE, 10-8 Australia. No, make that TWO ACES, 11-8 Australia. Third time its long, 9-11 Canada. Duff up to serve, Yudin shenks it, 10-11. Roberts fires one on Duff's chect, but he gets the up, Young dumps it on the second ball, Australia 12-10. Soonias looks for the line in out in position two, but it clips the antenna. Canada called for over the line on serve, they are not happy, even the Coach gets out of his chair, but he quietly calls time out, Australia push the lead to four 14-10.

Carrol spike is too long, 11-14 Canada. Roberts block by Kaminski, 12-14. Passier puts the quick into the cord, time out Australia 14-13. Roberts sends the ball down the line from position 2, Australia 15-13. Roberts ACES Van Lankvelt, he lets the ball hit the line in position 5, Technical time out, Australia lead 16-13.

Roberts sends his jumper long, 14-16 Canada. Yudin hits the black set for a winner. Triple block Australia, but Carroll takes the credit. The lead out to four for Australia, 18-14. Canada lacking communication in that point, sending it wide and outside the antenna. Passier serves into the net. Zingel's quick is way wide of the line, Australia letting Canada creep back into the game, 16-19. Alexander and Edgar on for Carroll and Young. Alexander up to serve. Alexand sets too high for Roberts. Mainville replaces Howsatson, Schneider for Soonias. Mainville called for penetration under the net, Canada continue to struggle with the referee calls. Schneider brings the ball back into play, Zingel pushes the free ball wide. Australia 22-18. Duff blocks Roberts, 19-22 Canada. Alexander with the one-handed set to passier who punishes it, 23-19. Mainville gets the tool 20-23 Canada. Reverse subs for both Australia and Canada. Howsaton sends his serve into the net to bring up match [point for the Australians, 24-20. Time out Canada. C'MON AUSSIE!

The crowd goes wild, the crowd are on their feet, but match point saved through Soonias, 21-24. Yudin soft, he puts it into the block, another match point saved. Australia call time out at 24-22.Winters serves, Triple block on Yudin, Soonias is pumped, Canada save another match point, 23-24. The rally of the match, it had everything, the crowd go wild for Australia, Young with two great defensive ups, Carroll drills it into the Canadian block and it lands at their feet, Australia take the match 25-23, 3:0.  Australia lead the series 2-0.
